Field Care

Your taxidermist should be your friend. Talk to them before you go on that hunt for proper care of your trophy.

  1. A good taxidermist can work miracles or so it seems, but a quality mount starts with your proper field care.
  2. Treat your hide/cape as if it were edible meat. Do not let it dry out, fold flesh to flesh. Keep it cool and away from flies, a game bag is a good idea.
  3. Plastic is your enemy unless you are freezing the hide or cape. Time is of the essence because of uncontrollable factors . Get it to your taxidermist as soon as possible.
  4. If you need to freeze your trophy avoid freezing the whole head. This includes bears with head and feet still attached. It takes a lot longer for them to thaw and bacteria are growing as they thaw. Place hide /capes in a plastic bag and remove as much air as possible. Double bagging is recommended.
  5. Salting of hides/capes is not recommended unless they have been totally fleshed and eyes, lips and nose have been split and ears turned.
  6. There are several YouTube videos showing how to cape your animal. Know before you go.

About Us

My name is Kraig Shammo. I have been doing taxidermy for over 30 years. I opened my business to the public in 2004.

I am located just outside Fruita, Colorado which is in West central Colorado, just off I-70 adjacent to the Utah state line. We have outstanding Mule Deer and Elk hunting all around us.

At High Desert Taxidermy we use the best of the commercial tanneries and supply companies because that is the foundation for a quality mount. Special attention is given to anatomy and muscle structure. Form alterations are possible to achieve that special pose. Antler repair is also available. All bases and habitats are custom built to match the mount.

We offer competitive prices and reasonable turn around times. I am an avid hunter and love the outdoors. Whether it’s camping, fishing, or just watching wildlife. I love nature and all its spender. Whether you are traveling to my area or you live close by, stop in and take a look at my work. If you are looking for a taxidermist remember price should not be the focus of your attention. Quality is always the #1 most important aspect.

Sorry we do not do fish or birds.
